A visit to a lavender field is on the list of things I want to do in my lifetime. I was longing to get lost among rows of lavender shrubs, taking in the lovely scent, when the flowers are in full bloom during the summer. So when we dropped by the Norfolk Lavender Farm in Heacham last summer, I had very high expectations and so was rather surprised when what we saw was more aptly defined as a back garden.
Perhaps I should have read the website more carefully as it did mention that a visit to the lavender fields require prior booking and that the distillery where we ended up going is a separate place. Even so, it was still good fun and we managed to take beautiful photos.
The place was easy to find, its along the A149 which is the road you take to get to the coastal villages. Entrance is free and parking spaces are available. It has an animal farm and play area to entertain children (for a fee), gift shops to tempt visitors and a lavender kitchen restaurant.
We visited on a weekend so there were plenty of visitors around and there was a charity event going on with stalls set up around garden and a leprechaun dance was being performed outside the cafe. I was enticed to buy a bag of dried lavender from the gift shops for future projects and we had lavender tea and cake in the restaurant.
It wasn't the day trip that I have imagined but I still enjoyed it anyway although it still means that a visit to a lavender field is not yet crossed off from my list.
